You can let the search engines know you are online with a few well chosen submissions to quality directories, social media websites and search engines.

And you will also benefit from a little traffic from these directories if you choose reputable, relevant places to submit to. Coupled with your own backlinking activities and creating fresh content regularly, Google should soon be spidering your website.

Now, everyone has seen offers of “we’ll submit your website to X number of search engines for 50 bucks”. Although they probably do as they state they will, these kinds of offers in most cases are just not worth it. There are free pieces of software available that will submit to about 100 search engines (Web CEO is the example I’m thinking of, but there are others available) - you might as well download and use that.)

A note about manual submissions. There are a couple of directories that warrant special attention. Yahoo, and DMoZ. DMOZ is free, but sometimes difficult to obtain a listing with. Yahoo charge a few hundred bucks with no guarantee of being listed.

DMOZ is slated, debated and rated throughout the world by different people every day. Doubts about Editors with vested interests manipulating the directory are rife. Google looks favourably enough on DMOZ to use it as the foundation of it’s own directory listings, so it’s still very important. Enough said there. Submit your site, and forget about it. Forget you’ve done it for some time. An editor was nice enough to take the time from his or her busy schedule to reply to me, and they told me that for some categories there was a backlog of 2 years. I know, I know…

Submit to Yahoo also, if you wish to. The cost is around 300 dollars with no certainty of acceptance, unless you’re a non-profit in which case you don’t pay the 300. But if you’re building a reputable, genuine website that is useful to your visitors, then you’re in the right area to submit to Yahoo Directory without too much fear.

Quick Tips:

  1. Search for:(your business niche) directory
  2. Check the quality of the directory. If it’s obvious that it’s been hit by spammers, move on.
  3. Find a small numer of relevant, quality directories and submit your site to them.
  4. Submit to the ODP (another name for DMOZ). Forget you’ve done it, and do not re-submit. If you re-submit your site you may actually go further down the queue. If you really have waited a while, contact the Editor for your category politely.
  5. Submit to Yahoo Directory if you want to shell out the bucks. You won’t be waiting as long as the ODP.

How Page Rank Affects Your Website And How To Check It

Page Rank is a useful indicator of how well respected a website is by Google. Wikipedia’s page rank for instance is incredible. Even Wikipedia began with a PR of zero many moons ago. Don’t worry so much about getting links from websites with immense page rank.

For one, they probably won’t want to link to you just when you’re getting started. And secondly, it’ll just kill your enthusiasm with all the rejections. If you want to grow a big tree, you sometimes have to start with the smallest seed. Read on if you’d like to find websites with a nice pagerank.

We’ll cover just one of the simplest ways to check a website’s pagerank, although there are a number of ways to do this. If you use Internet Explorer or another browser, that’s just fine, but I’d recommend getting hold of Firefox - it’s much nicer to use than IE, and there are thousands of free plugins and addons to expand it.

Search for, download and install the ‘Google toolbar’. I use it in Firefox all the time, and one of the nice little features is the Page Rank indicator on the toolbar. When you go to a website, have a look in your toolbar - there will be a small green bar if the website has pagerank. Hold your mouse cursor over it, and you’ll see the score from zero to ten. Easy. If you can’t see the indicator for Page Rank in your toolbar, right-click your Google Toolbar, click Google Toolbar Options, click Tools, then select the box for Page Rank and Save.

Armed with this toolbar addon, you can immediately check the page rank of whichever blogs or websites you’ve found that are most related to your business. But as I said, don’t discount the little guys! If you get a backlink from a website with Page Rank zero today, that site could grow and your link may be on a page with much higher page rank in the future.

There are many things to take into account when building backlinks, and pagerank is just one of them. Sure, it’s a great indicator of how well respected a website is by Google. Also, think of relevancy. If a website has no relation to your own website content, then there is no point in gunning for a link from them, even if you see they have a high Page Rank. So apply a little common sense.

 

  1. Download Firefox & install
  2. Download Google Toolbar & install
  3. Search for web pages or blogs relevant to your niche
  4. Look in your toolbar - check the Page Rank score
  5. If you like it, go for a backlink!
